"Is there really such a
thing as a good hair day?" wondered Candy, as she gazed in the mirror. She
hated what she saw. "How on earth can I fix this?"
Candy, who was thirteen, had
just colored her hair for the very first time. According to the directions on
the box, she was supposed to have reddish highlights in her dark, blonde hair.
Her best friend Mindy had just done hers earlier that week, and it had turned
out perfectly.
"Mom," she hollered.
"I need your help!"
Her mother heard the panic in
Candy's voice and came running upstairs.
"My God, girl, what did
you do to your hair?" she exclaimed.
"I just followed the
directions on the box," replied Candy, tearfully. "Maybe I left it in
too long. It was not supposed to turn out like this!"
"I don't know how to fix
it for you. Maybe a quick visit to my hairdresser would be in order."
Candy's mother telephoned her own hairdresser, who told her to bring Candy into
the hairdressing salon, immediately.
"I will die if anyone sees
me looking like this," Candy said, as she wrapped her hair tightly in a
long scarf. "I will never be able to live this down."
"Hairdressers run into
these kinds of crazy hair scenarios all the time," replied her mother, who
understood her daughter's dilemma. "I did the same thing to my hair when I
was your age, and the only thing I could do was get it cut and grow it out
again. It took forever. I would not even go to school."
The hairdresser was shocked,
too.
"Fortunately, you were
just highlighting your hair, Candy. There is not a lot that I can do with it
now, but how would you feel about having a really short haircut for the
spring?" the hairdresser asked her quietly.
"How short?"
"You will still have a few
highlights, but as your hair grows out, they will disappear."
Candy knew that she had no
other option.
"Mom, I am getting my hair
cut really short, so this turns into a good hair day!" she said excitedly.
"Is that all right with you?"
"Like mother, like
daughter!" her mother replied. "Can you do mine, too?
It turned out to be a great
hair day for both of them, as her mother had hers cut exactly the same way.
Even Mindy loved Candy's new hairdo.
