It was Christmas Eve, nearly time for
Santa to depart on his annual journey delivering Christmas toys around the
world.
"Sven, come quickly!" a male voice ordered above the loud din of Santa's busy workshop. "We need your help right now!"
Little did Sven suspect that he was about to become the victim of a Christmas prank. As the smallest of all of the Christmas elves making toys for children, Sven often had to contend with Santa's mischievous helpers and their pranks.
"What's happening?" he wondered. "I am so tiny that no one ever needs my help."
Santa was nowhere in sight, but several elves were busy loading his sleigh.
"The spring on that Jack-in-a-box is broken!" said Olaf, a mischievous elf, as he saw Sven scurrying toward them.
Sven spotted the bright red, Jack-in-the-box at the end of Santa's sleigh. The top was open and it appeared that the precariously perched clown was about to fall over.
"No problem, I can fix it," replied Sven, with a smile. "Sometimes being tiny does have advantages." He suspected that the spring at the bottom of the box was not broken, but rather, had become detached.
"Hurry up!" ordered Olaf, abruptly. "We don't have very much time. Santa has to leave shortly."
"Lift me up!" Sven said, pulling out his mini tool kit. "I will have it fixed in a jiffy!"
He was right, but in order to repair it, he had to get inside the box. For Sven, it felt wonderful to feel needed, and being able to do something for Santa at the very last minute was even more special. As he worked at the bottom of the Jack-in-the-box, re-attaching the spring, Sven heard Santa's voice in the distance.
"All set, men?" Santa asked the elves, as he climbed onto the sleigh.
"Just about, Santa," Olaf assured him, with a grin.
Suddenly, everything went dark inside as the top slammed shut, and its lock clicked in place.
"Hey!" hollered Sven.
Olaf quickly placed the Jack-in-the-box with Sven inside, into Santa's huge, black bag. "Some little boy or girl is in for a big surprise."
He tapped on the top of the box several times and whispered, "Sven, you are about to make your first trip around the world. Have a good trip!"
