"About last night, I have no regrets,"
insisted Caroline. "I know that what I did was the right thing to
do!"
Caroline's mother was very angry and had been
questioning her relentlessly about her whereabouts, as she had failed to come
home until almost seven am that morning. When Caroline did come in, she looked
pretty rough. Her mother did not like what she saw and suspected the worst.
"I could have called and told you I was at
my girlfriend's place, but that would have been lying to you and Dad."
"We were worried sick that something had
happened to you. Caroline, you could have at least called to let us know you
were all right. You are only fifteen and should have done that! We almost
called the police."
"Mom, you know that you raised me to act on
my own instincts and to do what is right. I did that and I know that what I did
was right. I have no regrets."
"Can you at least tell us who you were with, and where you were?"
"Mom, can you please just trust me?"
"The next time you pull a crazy stunt like
this, we are putting you on a curfew. You will lose your privileges and your
smart phone, too" cautioned her mother, sternly. "There is the
doorbell! Go answer it."
Doris, Caroline's best friend, was standing there
looking relieved.
"You saved my life last night. How can I
ever thank you?"
"Just don't ever do something that dumb
again," suggested Caroline. "I am in enough trouble already, without
having to rescue you, too."
"Your Mom and Dad giving you a hard time for
not coming home?"
"What do you think?"
"I don't really know. I probably would not
have been in Emergency all night for an overdose, if my parents were around
like they should be. The police called them to bring me in today for a talk
about doing drugs. I just want to say thank you for being there for me during
the night."
"Unless you clean up your act immediately,
you and I cannot be best friends any longer. I don't need any trouble with my
Mom and Dad, but no regrets. I did what I had to do by taking you to the
Emergency Department. Never again."
"I promise," replied Doris .
